Not a problem. If you specialise in ferns, you'll quickly recognise familiar ones, and notice ones that look new and interesting. You'll also learn where to expect particular species. They are very predictable. Get a good reference. For ferns, I still use the old Australian Ferns and Fern Allies by David Jones & Stephen Clemesha.
