This species is known from a variety of habitats such as dry sclerophyll forest and woodland, arid shrubland and heath, at altitudes of 290–1150 m.
This species has almost exclusively been labelled as P. thymoides, an incorrect name for P. hirtellus sensu stricto, (see above). Phyllanthus occidentalis is similar to P. hirtellus, in which it has been included by, for example, James and Harden (1990).
The diagnostic features of P. occidentalis are very stable; however, around Black Mountain in the A.C.T. and the Coonabarabran area of New South Wales, some plants have a form that approaches that of P. hirtellus,
i.e. possessing wider, less revolute leaves and less dense indumentum.
